All roads lead through Ruma
The beginnings of the organized life of human communities on the wider territory of the Roman municipality, give even more from prehistory. This is evidenced by the archaeological finds of prehistoric settlements, each of which is the most famous archaeological site of Gomolava near the village of Hrtkovaca ..
For the first time, the Roman invading army came to the middle of two era in Srem, and it soon became one of the most important Roman Roman customs, with Sirmium as one of the capital of the Roman Empire. In addition to Sirmium, a significant craft center in Srem was also Bajsana (near Donji Petrovac).
At the time of the Great Emigration of Nations (from the 3rd century onwards) various Germanic nations, then Huns, Avars and Slovenes destroyed the Roman culture on this ground. After 1526, Srem became an integral part of the great Turkish empire. At that time, the settlement with the name Ruma was mentioned for the first time. A place with such a name was recorded in the Sremskiy defender from 1566/7. years.
From the Peace of Pozarevac in 1718, the Austro-Hungarian authorities replaced Turkey and will continue in Srem in the next two hundred years. In 1744, the Military Border was formed, in which Mitrovica remains, while Ruma is in the province. The city, as we know it, is the result of the planned formation and colonization. Vlastelin Marko Pejačević, based on the ordered plan from 1746, started building a new city. The street system was orthogonal and the conditions for construction were precisely prescribed.
